Practice Profile

Karen joined Chambers upon completion of her pupillage with Mr. John Reading SC, Mr. Kenny Lin, Mr. Albert Luk, Mr. Joseph Lee and Mr. Jeffrey Li.

Before joining the Bar, Karen gained five years of experience as a Court Prosecutor in the Eastern and Kowloon City Magistracies, prosecuting a wide range of cases in trial and plea court. She served as acting Senior Court Prosecutor II for a substantial period prior to her pupillage.

On the civil side, Karen has been developing a board practice during her pupillage, including personal injury, land dispute, commercial litigation and matrimonial law. She has appeared in the District Court and CFI as a sole advocate for contract case and bankruptcy and winding-up petitions.

On the criminal side, Karen has appeared in the Magistracy as a sole advocate for mitigation, bail application and trial after pupillage. She advised and assisted the clients to file complaints with ICAC and the police for suspected bribery, fraud and theft in relation to misconduct of the board of directors. She also assisted the client to file complaints with regulatory bodies, including SFC, HKEX and AFRC for irregularities.

Her criminal practice spans a wide spectrum of offences, including general crimes, money laundering, fraud, sexual offences, drug related offences, driving offences, industrial summons, customs & excise related offences and ICAC related offences.

Karen is fluent in English, Cantonese and Putonghua. She accepts instructions in all areas of chambers’ practice, with a particular focus in criminal matters.

  • KCCC 3137/2022 - Ill-treatment by those in charge of child — CCTV link trial, for a case involving a stepmother slapped the victim (9 years old) and it required handling of the vulnerable witness.
  • KCCC 1783/2022 - Conspiracy to traffic in dangerous drugs and Doing an act tending and intended to pervert the course of public justice — a case involving a parcel from Canada containing 892g of herbal cannabis was intercepted at the HK airport and C&E decoy officer delivered that parcel to the defendant’s residence. The defendant deleted all the call records with the other when he was on the way home after receiving the call from the officer.
  • KCCC 2107/2022 - Using forged document — the case involving the sub-contractor forged the signatures of the workers in order to ask the main contractor for payment.

  • KCCC 1307/2022 - 4 counts of Indecent assault — a case involving the complainant who was the ex-student and the summer part-time employee of the defendant at the time of the offence. It required the use of screen and special passageway. Parties made submission on recent complainant.
  • ESCC 420/2021 - Criminal intimation — a case involving road rage element. The defendant used a hammer to threaten the victim who was the driver asked the defendant to move his light goods vehicle.
  • ESCC 1261/2021 - Managing vice establishment — a case involving a decoy operation against a vice establishment which purported to be a massage establishment.
  • ESCC 417/2020 - Inflicting grievous bodily harm (s19 of Cap 212) — the defendant used hot water to splash the victim who was the co-worker and it resulted in second-degree burn.
  • ESCC 2797/2020 - Theft — the defendant took away the mobile phone which left unattended at the ATM. The defence counsel were Ms. Maggie Wong, SC and Ms. Karry Lau.
  • ESCC 105/2021 - Prohibition of Establishing Business as Illegal Immigrant — the case involved challenging the admissibility of the record of interview, including the accuracy of the translation.
  • ESCC 1558/2020 - 7 counts of Theft — the case involved challenging the admissibility of the record of interview on the basis that the police officer first cautioned the defendant for criminal damages not theft.
  • ESCC 700001/2022 - 2 counts of Possessing anything with intent to destroy or damage property and 1 count of Possession of offensive weapon (s17 of Cap 228) — a juvenile case and application to consolidate the two incidents involving written submission (led by SPP).
  • ESS 41115/2021 - Careless driving — the defendant was Professor Lai, the world-renowned expert of gastroenterology and hepatology.>
